Southern Lee crashes Union Pines homecoming, 57-21
Emond Caldwell threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as Southern Lee pounded Union Pines Friday night.
The win snapped a six-game losing streak for the Cavaliers (2-6, 1-2), who won for the first time in nearly two months. The Vikings (4-5, 1-3) lost on homecoming, dropping their third game in a row.
Caldwell opened the scoring by breaking through the defensive line on a third-and-one quarterback sneak and rushing 15 yards to the end zone. He finished the game with 11 rushes for 83 yards.
Caldwell also completed 10-of -18 passes for 183 yards. Late in the first half, he hit Aaron Blockman for a 65-yard touchdown. After Union Pines lost a fumble on its first snap of the next drive, Caldwell found Blockman again for a 23-yard scoring strike. The pair hooked up on a 14-yard score in the second half.
Blockman had 120 yards on five catches, improving his season totals to 1,220 yards on 55 catches, and 14 touchdowns.
Southern Lee had 315 yards on the ground, led by Cullen Boyette, who rushed for 112 yards on 10 carries. Boyette scored twice, on runs of 7 and 42 yards. He also added 28 yards on a fake punt.
Patrick Bunnell also had two touchdown runs and finished with 60 yards for the Cavaliers.
Union Pines was led by running back Kaleb Johnson, who had a 27-yard touchdown run in the first half and a 68 yarder in the second half. He led all rushers with 168 yards on 19 carries.
The Vikings struggled in the air, however. Starting quarterback Max Yates was 1-of-7 for negative 5 yards before leaving after getting injured early in the fourth quarter. Charles Heller replaced Yates and threw a 57-yard touchdown pass to Demarius Hampton on his second snap.
Southern Lee hosts Fayetteville Westover next Friday. Union Pines travels to Fayetteville Douglas Byrd.
