Mellette adds All-American honor to great season
Former Southern Lee basketball standout Josh Mellette earned All American honors this week as part of leading Wake Tech Community College to the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) Div. II national semifinals this season. Mellette, a sophomore with the Eagles, received a spot on the NJCAA Div. II First Team All-American Team.
Mellette, a 6-foot-5 forward, led the nation in NJCAA Div. II and the Region X Conference in rebounding with 12.3 rebounds per game.
He was the conference leader and second nationally with 3.0 blocked shots per game. Mellette averaged 15.5 points per game and made 65.1 percent of his field goal attempts for the season.
Mellette, who also won the Region X Player of the Year award as Wake Tech won the regional championship, helped Wake Tech to its first NJCAA National Championship Tournament appearance in the program's five-year history. The Eagles finished fourth in the nation.
"We had a great basketball team this year, and Josh has been extraordinary.” said Wake Tech Athletics Director Barry Street. “We’re extremely proud of all our student athletes – they’re not only talented, but totally committed to giving nothing less than their absolute best.”
Mellette is a 2012 Southern Lee graduate. He will graduate from Wake Tech with an Associate in Arts degree in May and is being recruited by several top universities according to the college.
