Southern Lee defense shuts down Westover
Southern Lee (3-6, 2-2) ran its win streak to two games, scoring a 31-6 victory over winless Fayetteville Westover (0-9, 0-4) on Friday.
The Cavaliers’ defense was dominant, sacking Westover quarterback Derrick Fitts twice, recovering a fumble and getting an interception. Fitts was just 2-of-11 for 33 yards in the game.
Despite Westover’s low passing numbers, Southern Lee was even more impressive defending against the run. The Wolverines ran the ball 52 times but managed just 112 yards, a 2.2 yards-per-carry average. In the second half, Westover gained just 27 yards on 22 carries for a 1.2-yard average.
The Cavaliers defense stopped the Wolverines on all four of their fourth-down attempts. Southern Lee also blocked two Westover punts.
Southern Lee senior wide receiver Aaron Blockman did all of his damage in the first half, reaching halftime with more yards than the entire Westover offense. Blockman caught three passes for 142 yards. After a Monte McLean run put the Cavaliers on top in the first quarter, Blockman caught a 41-yard touchdown pass from Emond Caldwell to start the second quarter.
Later in the second quarter, with Southern Lee facing second-and-24 from its own 21-yard line, Blockman caught a Caldwell pass near midfield, broke a tackle and ran the rest of the way for a 79-yard score.
Caldwell was 5-of-11 for 151 yards and an interception on the night.
Running back Patrick Bunnell added a 33-yard touchdown run early in the second half, breaking several tackles on his way to the end zone, to cap the night’s scoring. Bunnell led all rushers with 63 yards on 10 carries.
Westover hosts Lee County next Friday, while Southern Lee faces Terry Sanford.
