Cavs, Jackets start tourneys at home

With state tournament spots locked up but conference pride on the line, both Southern Lee basketball teams and Lee County's boys' team will open their postseasons playing on their home courts Monday and Tuesday.

The Cavaliers will host their respective Western Harnett rivals in first round games of the Cape Fear Valley Conference tournaments Monday. The ladies' game is set for 6 p.m. and the boys' game is set for a 7:30 p.m. tip.

The Yellow Jackets will host Panther Creek in the first round of the Tri-Nine Conference Tournament Tuesday at 7 p.m.

The Lady Cavaliers (12-11, 9-3), season runner-up in the CFVC, swept No. 7 Western Harnett in the regular season; winning 32-26 in Lillington in December and 35-30 at Southern Lee on Jan. 30.

The Cavaliers (13-9, 10-2) have won four straight games and 10 of their last 11 contests heading into the postseason. The Cavs' last three wins came down to one-possession games.

The No. 2 Cavs also swept the No. 7 Eagles during the regular season; winning 60-43 at Western Harnett and 43-27 at Cavalier Court.

The CFVC girls' semifinals will be hosted by season-champ Overhills Wednesday at 6 and 7:30 p.m. The boys' semis are set for top-seeded Westover Thursday at 6 and 7:30 p.m.

Lee County (12-12, 9-7) is the No. 4 seed for the Tri-Nine Tournament, the Jackets' final Tri-Nine basketball tourney for the time being as Lee County will become a 3A school, and a Cape Fear Valley mate of Southern Lee, next school year.

The Yellow Jackets swept No. 5 Panther Creek in the regular season; winning 56-53 at Panther Creek in December and 62-54 in Sanford on Feb. 5.

The Tri-Nine semis are set for Wednesday at Holly Springs at 5:30 and 8:30 p.m.

The first round of the NCHSAA State Tournament is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 25.
