Douglas Byrd upsets Lady Cavs, 39-34
One round after upsetting No. 3-seeded Union Pines in the Cape Fear Valley Conference Tournament, No. 6 Douglas Byrd did the same to No. 2 Southern Lee in a tourney semifinal, 39-34, Wednesday night at Overhills High School.
The two victories put the Lady Eagles, after a 3-11 conference mark in the regular season, one win away from the CFVC title and a spot in the NCHSAA 3A State Tournament. Southern Lee, while the runner-up in the CFVC season, has been no stranger to low-scoring, tight ballgames all season long.
Douglas Byrd opened the game with hot shooting, especially by sophomore guard Sade Rogers, and held on as the Lady Cavaliers (13-12) tried fighting back in the last few minutes. Rogers knocked down three jumpers, for seven points, in the first few Lady Eagle possessions and Douglas Byrd, not acting like an underdog in the least, jumped out to a 13-4 lead.
Douglas Byrd held the Lady Cavs to three points in the second period and led 18-11 at the half. The Lady Cavs made plenty of their own problems, losing 13 turnovers in the first half and finishing with 24 on the night.
The Lady Eagles even got by when Rogers was in foul trouble and on the bench for most of the third quarter, stretching their lead to 26-16 at the 2:09 mark of the third when she checked back in.
The Lady Cavs didn't have the same luxury as senior guard Brianna Taylor, their top scorer, rebounder and defender, picked up her third foul late in the third quarter and her fourth foul with 5:34 left in the game and Douglas Byrd leading 28-21.
Jasmine McIver made a driving scoop shot bringing the Lady Cavs within 29-25 with 4:25 left. Taylor drained a long three off the dribble to make it 30-28 Douglas Byrd with 2:39 left. It was a big spark but the comeback never made it all the way back.
Taylor fouled out, trying to fight around what the Lady Cavs argued was a Lady Eagle moving screen on the perimeter, with 1:19 left. Still, from a 34-28 Lady Eagle lead, Jordanna Kalkhof made a pair at the line, then a score off an offensive rebound to get Southern Lee within a bucket.
Another Lady Eagle turnover gave the Lady Cavs a chance to tie or lead with 0:30 left. The Cavs rushed the ball up to Kalkhof who traveled.
After an Eagle timeout, the following inbounds play went long to Rogers breaking to the hoop for a lay-up. McIver went 2-for-2 at the line, making it 36-34 with 0:17 left, and after a 1-for-2 Lady Eagle trip to the line Southern Lee had another shot to tie but never got a three-pointer off, instead losing the ball out of bounds along the sideline.
Rogers led Douglas Byrd with 13 points. Point guard Brittany Trotman had 10 points and five assists.
Deshele Sumpter led the Lady Cavaliers with eight points and four boards. Kalkhof and McIver had six points. Taylor finished with five points. Rachel Wilson led the Lady Cavs with seven rebounds.
Douglas Byrd will get the winner of Westover vs. Overhills in the conference final Friday evening. Southern Lee moves on to the NCHSAA 3A State Tournament with the first round set for Monday.
