Area scores: Chargers rally in the seventh over Cardinal Gibbons

Baseball
Northwood 10, Cardinal Gibbons 9
Three nights after a 15-2 Cardinal Gibbons win in Raleigh, the Chargers scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh for a walk-off Big Eight victory in Pittsboro Friday night.
Cardinal Gibbons (7-3, 1-2) led 7-3 going to the Charger fifth. Northwood (5-7, 3-3) cut the lead to 7-6 before two Crusader runs in the top of the seventh.
With two out in the bottom of the seventh, Zach Higgins hit a double to score Trevor Hackney for the winning run. Hackney had reached with an RBI single.
Northwood will host J.F. Webb in Big Eight play at 6 p.m Tuesday.

 

Triton 15, Western Harnett 5
The Hawks (8-2, 4-0) rolled in the first-ever Two Rivers contest between Triton and Western Harnett (4-8, 1-3) Friday night in Erwin. Triton leads the Two Rivers standings, leading South Johnston and Corinth Holders - where the Hawks will play at 7 p.m. Tuesday - by one game.
Western Harnett will host Cleveland  for a conference game at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

 

Jordan-Matthews 4, Graham 0
The Jets (10-2, 4-0) blanked the Red Devils (3-6, 2-3) on the road in a Mid-State game Friday night.
Josh Hudson and Ethan Cook combined for the shutout. The Jets have won eight straight games with four shutouts in the streak.
Jordan-Matthews will host Carrboro for a league game at 7 p.m. Friday.

 

Queen's Grant 6, Chatham Central 4
Queen's Grant (8-5, 5-3) took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the sixth for a Yadkin Valley win versus the Bears (3-7, 3-5) in Matthews Friday night.
Jeremy Kerr and Zack Burke both went 3 for 4 with a run and an RBI for the Bears, who made it 4-4 with two runs in the fifth before the Stallions regained the lead.
Chatham Central will host North Moore at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

 

North Moore 5, Gray Stone Day 0
The Mustangs (6-4, 5-2) blanked Gray Stone Day to take a Yadkin Valley victory at Pfeiffer University's Ferebee Field Friday afternoon. North Moore played Fairmont yesterday and will travel to Chatham Central for a YVC game at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

 

Union Pines 25, Westover 0
The Vikings (8-5, 5-2) routed visiting Westover in three innings Friday night in Cape Fear Valley Conference play.
Evan Shearer and Brandon Oakley combined to pitch a no-hitter.
Union Pines will go to Terry Sanford (8-5, 5-1) for a 7 p.m. start Monday. Terry Sanford took the Cameron game 6-1 on March 14. Southern Lee (11-3, 6-1) leads the CFVC standings.

 

Pinecrest 14, Hoke County 0
The Patriots (10-3, 3-2) made it a 3-0 week within the Southeastern Conference winning in five innings at Hoke County (4-7, 0-5) Friday night.
Pinecrest scored seven runs in the top of the first. Dylan Wallace hit a three-run home run.
Pinecrest will play an SEC game at Purnell Swett at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

 

Chatham Charter 8, East Wake Academy 5
The Knights prevailed on the road in Knightdale Friday afternoon. Chatham Charter will play at River Mill at 4 p.m. Monday.

 

Softball
Douglas Byrd 11, Southern Lee 7
Though a closer contest than a 13-2 Douglas Byrd win in early March, the Lady Eagles (7-6, 4-3) took a regular-season sweep over Southern Lee (2-10, 2-5) Friday night in Fayetteville.
The Lady Cavaliers will play a CFVC game at Gray's Creek at 7 p.m. Monday.

 

Triton 13, Western Harnett 3
The Lady Hawks broke open a 1-1 game with six runs in the home half of the third inning and went on to win the first Two Rivers meeting between the county rivals Friday night at Triton.
Lindsey Champion led the Lady Hawk hitting with three doubles, three runs and three RBI. Erica Occena, Kayce Graves and Emma Thomas added two RBI each. Kayla Baker pitched a complete game for the win.
Triton (8-4, 3-1) will play at Corinth Holders at 7 p.m. Tuesday and Western Harnett (4-7, 2-2) will welcome Cleveland at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

 

North Moore 6, Gray Stone Day 3
The Lady Mustangs (8-1, 6-1) bounced back from their first loss of the season, versus North Stanly on Wednesday, with a Yadkin Valley win at home Friday.
North Moore will play at Pinecrest Monday at 6 p.m. The Lady Mustangs beat Pinecrest 11-1 on March 26.

 

East Wake Academy 11, Chatham Charter 10
Chatham Charter broke out to a 9-1 lead in the first two-and-a-half innings before East Wake Academy fought back, making it a 10-9 Lady Knight lead through four innings before taking the lead with two runs in the home half of the sixth.
The Lady Knights will play at River Mill Academy at 4 p.m. Monday.

 

Jordan-Matthews 6, Graham 4 - 8 innings
The Lady Jets (8-3, 4-0) completed a regular-season sweep versus Graham (4-4, 2-3) thanks to two runs in the top of the eighth inning on Friday.
Jordan-Matthews, with a four-game winning streak, will play at Carrboro at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

 

Pinecrest 9, Hoke County 5
The Lady Patriots (8-3, 3-2) claimed an SEC victory at Hoke County (5-8, 0-5) Friday night.
Jordan Blake led the Lady Patriots going 4 for 5 with a double, two runs and two RBI. Blake and Madison Thum shared the pitching duty. Bri Embler and Erica Groff each had a triple and a run.
Pinecrest will host North Moore Monday at 6 p.m. and play at Purnell Swett at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

 

Girls soccer
Southern Lee 9, Westover 0
The Lady Cavaliers (9-3, 7-2) rolled to their second mercy-rule win of the season over Westover in Fayetteville Friday night.
Southern Lee will host Union Pines (8-2-1, 6-1-0) at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The Lady Vikings beat Southern Lee 3-0 in Cameron on March 21.

 

Triton 4, Western Harnett 1
Demarshay Devane and Jessica Portillo scored two goals each leading the Lady Hawks (8-4-1, 3-2-0) to a Two Rivers victory over county rival Western Harnett (2-5, 0-4) Friday night in Erwin.
Triton keeper Kala West made six saves. Triton led 3-1 at halftime.
The Lady Eagles will host Cleveland for a conference match at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Triton goes to Corinth Holders for a Two Rivers match at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

 

East Wake Academy 2, Chatham Charter 0
East Wake Academy scored goals in the 60th and 72nd minutes to defeat the visiting Lady Knights in Knightdale Friday afternoon.
Chatham Charter will host Woods Charter at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

 

Cape Fear Academy 4, O'Neal 0
Cape Fear Academy beat visiting O'Neal in a Cape Fear Independent Conference match in Wilmington Friday afternoon. O'Neal will host Village Christian for a CFIC match at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

 

Northern Durham 4, Harnett Central 1
Northern Durham (4-5, 1-1 PAC-6) won a non-conference match at Harnett Central (4-6, 2-3 Greater Neuse River) Friday. Northern Durham led 2-1 at halftime.
The Lady Trojans will return to league play hosting West Johnston at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

 

Pinecrest 1, Middle Creek 0
The Lady Patriots (8-2-1, 5-1-0 Southeastern) edged Middle Creek (1-3-2, 0-2-2 Southwestern Wake Athletic) in The Brittany event in Wilson Friday night.
Pinecrest played Fike in Wilson yesterday. The Lady Patriots will host Lumberton at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

 

Boys lacrosse
Northwood 21, Northern Vance 2
The Chargers (7-2, 3-0) blew out Northern Vance for the second time in a week in Pittsboro Friday evening. Northwood jumped out to an 11-1 lead in the opening quarter and it was 16-2 at halftime.
Northwood travels to face Cedar Ridge at 6 p.m. Monday.
