Meet the Cavaliers
Southern Lee celebrated the fast-approaching fall sports seasons as one, united Cavalier team during Meet the Cavaliers Night Thursday evening.
If odd uses for sports gear the Cavalier athletes are usually quite adept with, such as two Cavs, sometimes many inches or pounds apart, running relay races with a soccer ball wedged between their backs, the Cavs will be in fine shape after Meet the Cavaliers. Either way, the evening was a fun break from the first week of full preseason practices and only a little more than week to go before being ready for the regular seasons.
Four Cavalier sports programs will be taking the field, court or course under new coaching. Don Simon is Southern Lee’s new football coach. Vickie Wilkins is the new Lady Cavalier tennis coach. Mackenzie Sorels and Heather Harvey are the new co-head coaches for Cavalier cross country. Chris Palme will be coaching Southern Lee soccer.Palme, along with the pressure of coaching his son Alex, who’s a senior midfielder, will be leading the four-time Cape Fear Valley Conference champs who have gone 12-0 for each of those four CFVC titles and have a 51-match conference winning streak in all. The Cavaliers went 17-3-2 overall and reached the third round of the NCHSAA State Tournament last fall.
Southern Lee volleyball, under head coach Jennifer Goldberg, had its best season in program history last year, winning its first CFVC season championship and making the NCHSAA State Tournament. The Lady Cavaliers went 13-5 overall, with two seniors on last season’s squad, and seven juniors return making for an experienced Lady Cavalier team.
“We’re all looking forward to a great season for all our athletic teams” said Simon, introducing the Cavalier teams, who came out of the large, inflated football helmet before remaining mixed Cavalier teams for relay races such as carrying golf balls in spoons.
“Our expectations for Southern Lee athletics have never been higher,” Simon said.
Meet the Cavaliers was put on by the Southern Lee Athletic Boosters.
Simon’s debut with the Cavs will be at Western Harnett, no longer a Cape Fear Valley rival, in Lillington on Aug. 23. The Cavs face three road games before hosting Triton on Sept. 13.
Cavalier soccer kicks off at home against Southwestern Randolph on Aug. 21. Lady Cavalier volleyball will be in the preseason All-Lee County Tournament at Lee Christian, with Lee County and Grace Christian playing as well, on Aug. 17 before opening up by hosting Northwood on Aug. 20.
Lady Cavalier golf will open up on Sept. 3 with a match against Lee County, which is now a conference rivalry for all Cavalier and Yellow Jacket contests.
Lady Cavalier tennis starts with a conference match at Douglas Byrd on Aug. 19. Southern Lee cross country opens on Aug. 28 with a meet at Douglas Byrd.
