Southern Lee surges past Vikings, 60-46
A Cavalier run partway through the third quarter gave Southern Lee the lead for good and the Cavaliers (12-6, 6-2) completed a regular-season sweep of Union Pines (8-11, 2-6) with a 60-46 win on Cavalier Court Tuesday night.
Southern Lee, trying to rebound from a loss at Gray's Creek Saturday evening, battled the Vikings in a back and forth game until the Cavalier offense got going for an 8-0 run, to take a 40-33 lead with a couple minutes left in the third period.
The Cavs held a 28-27 edge at halftime and the Vikings started the second half trading threes for twos as treys by Armani McCoy and Tyler Packer led to the one-point Viking lead.
After both sides went cold for a few possessions, Southern Lee scored four straight hoops, including a four-point play as Noah Mellette scored on a curl and drive down the lane and was fouled. Larry McLeod rebounded Mellette's miss from the line and scored. Kevin McLeod scored in the low post taking the Cavalier lead to 40-33. Southern Lee led 42-35 going to the fourth quarter.
Cameron Martin's three-pointer gave the Cavaliers a 48-37 lead, their first double-digit lead of the game, with less than five minutes left. Martin, who didn't score in the first three quarters, added five more points in the final minutes helping the Cavs put the victory away.
On the defensive end, Larry McLeod's rebounded helped the Cavalier lead remain safe as the high-rising forward gathered 16 rebounds, 13 coming in the second half and, aside from his two in the four-point play, most coming on defense.
A Martin pull-up jumper from a wing, then a tip-in basket by Larry McLeod stretched Southern Lee's lead to 54-42 as the clock ran under two minutes.
Union Pines made the Cavaliers work hard most of the way. The Vikings got out to a 5-0 lead and had success early going into the paint to center Luke Davis and forward Darrin Carlyle.
The Vikings led 11-10 after one period. McCoy kept the Vikings ahead with a driving three-point play, then another lay-up.
Justin McKinnon's lay-up, then his high-low assist to Kevin McLeod for a basket, gave the Cavs four quick points and a 21-20 edge.
Kevin McLeod had seven points and McKinnon added six points and three assists in the first half.
For the game, Davis led the Vikings with nine points. McCoy had eight points. Carlyle led UP on the boards with five.
Kevin McLeod scored 14 points and had seven rebounds for the Cavaliers. Mellette, McKinnon and Martin had eight points each. Larry McLeod and Charles Wicker scored seven each.
Southern Lee will host Lee County (15-3, 5-2) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. It's the first meeting of the season, after two attempts have been postponed, for the county rivals as new conference rivals.
