Cape Fear tops Cougars in volleyball opener
Central Carolina Community College opened its volleyball regular season at home Friday. Visiting Cape Fear C.C. defeated the Cougars in straight sets, 25-12, 25-9, 25-20.
CCCC ran a 6-2 offensive set-up with all 11 players participating in the first two sets. The Cougars struggled with their rotations said head coach Bill Carter, but switched to a 5-1 offensive set-up and played well in the third set.
The Cougars had trouble with the Sea Devils' 6-foot-1 lefty right side hitter.
"We will make some adjustments to our blocking match-ups and hope to change the outcome of the rematch," Carter said.
CCCC's 6-foot-2 middle hitter Payton Kelly and Cape Fear's 6-foot-2 middle hitter Brittany Jefferson were teammates at Overhills and teammates on the Brick City Volleyball Club coached by Carter.
The Central Carolina squad also includes Erica Davidson and Makaila Gillum of Lee Christian, Madison Henley and Hunter Riggins of Southern Lee, Karey Beth Howard of Lee County, Geena Bryant and Desiree Freeman of Western Harnett and Keshonta Williams of Harnett Central.
The Cougars will face the Sea Devils again at 6 p.m. Thursday in Wilmington.
