Yellow Jackets pin down county victory
Pins decided all 12 contested matches, with Lee County earning seven of them, as the Yellow Jackets beat county-rival Southern Lee 48-36 Wednesday night in the first-ever dual which was a conference dual between the Jackets and Cavaliers.
Zachary Thomas (106), Carson Blackburn (120), Karson Cole (126), Lorenzo McLean (132), Dalton Messer (145), William Shoop (160) and Aaron Coley (170), along with one forfeited win, gave the Yellow Jackets the victory, taking their Cape Fear Valley mark to 2-1 with three CFVC matches to go.
The Cavaliers, starting with the 220-pound match, got the first victory of the night with Ben Long pinning Eric Dotson 1:00 into the first period.
The Cavs forfeited the heavyweight match and starting at 106 pounds the Yellow Jackets won four of the next five classes.
Thomas needed just 30 seconds to turn a headlock into a victory. Blackburn led 5-2 after the first period and finished with a pin in the first minute of the second period taking his season record to 11-6.
Cole, in 1:16 off the clock, and McLean, beating the first-period buzzer by a second, won their matches in the first period. Lee County led 30-12 following McLean's win.
At 113, Anthony Brown's pin with 0:56 left in the third period was the lone Cavalier win during the Yellow Jacket run. Brown improves to a 16-6 season record.
At 145, Messer, a Jacket junior, was done and victorious practically before he started with a pin in 0:19.
The Cavs answered with Antwone Lutterloh winning via a second-period pin, with 0:13 left in the period, versus Jacob Gunter after the two were tied, 4-4, after one period. The Yellow Jackets led 36-24 at that point.
Lee County clinched the victory in the next two contests.
Shoop had a long near-fall to end the first period, as part of gaining a 5-0 lead, then won with a pin with 1:12 left in the second. Shoop is 6-0 on the season.
At 170, Coley led 7-2 before getting a pin with 1:01 left in the second period, mathematically finishing the Yellow Jacket victory.
The last two weight classes were still heated contests and the Cavaliers getting the last two pins.
Jonathan McCullen improved to an 18-4 individual mark, leading the whole way despite being cut and being hit with two penalties, with a pin late in the second period.
Sean Giles led 6-3 after a period and won with a pin with 0:57 left in the second.
Lee County (5-6, 2-1) will in action Saturday in the Charger Cup at Northwood starting at 9 a.m.
Southern Lee (3-15, 0-3) will host Terry Sanford for a CFVC dual on Jan. 22.
