Overhills conquers Cavs

Overhills beat Southern Lee on the tennis courts on Tuesday and Wednesday, giving the Jaguars the inside track to one of the top two spots in the Cape Fear Valley Conference and one of the CFVC’s automatic berths into the NCHSAA State Tournament. The Jaguars won Tuesday’s matches 7-2, then 5-4 at Southern Lee on Wednesday.

The score was tighter overall, and the Cavaliers (6-4, 6-3) weren’t far off from flipping that 5-4 result in their favor, making Cavalier head coach Rob Newman excited, even as the matches were in progress, about his team’s competitiveness.

At No. 1 singles, Jacob Lee edged Southern Lee’s Luke Foushee 10-8 in round one on Tuesday. Foushee returned the favor with a 10-8 win, holding Lee off as he tried fighting back late in the second match.

Overhills’ Zach Rainwater defeated Jake Garner 10-8 on Tuesday at No. 4 singles. Garner prevailed on his home court 10-8.

Avenging results didn’t go all Southern Lee’s way in the back-to-back matches. At No. 5 singles, Southern’s Peyton Wolf won 10-7 against Kevin Griffin on Tuesday, only for Griffin to win a marathon of a singles match, 10-8, on Wednesday.

In doubles, in the No. 1 match, Lee and Will Erwin beat Foushee and Jay Randolph 8-5 at Overhills. Foushee and Randolph had little problem rolling to an 8-2 win the next day at Southern Lee.

“We’re playing so much better than we did yesterday. It’s good to see,” Newman said in between encouraging his players to keep their hustle going during doubles matches.

The Jaguars and Cavaliers dealt with chilly, but mostly windy, conditions. The wind blew Gatorade bottles off of benches and across courts. Track suits, winter caps and sweatshirts were good ideas by the players. The gusts clearly changed play from one side of the court to the other, making simple things such as tosses for serves tricky.

Overhills trails perennial conference leader Union Pines by a game atop the CFVC standings. Undefeated Union Pines gave the Jaguars their only CFVC loss so far and gave the Cavs their only loss prior to facing Overhills.

Now likely too far out of reaching the top two in the conference, the Cavaliers are aiming for a wild card spot into states and having as many Cavs as possible make the individual regional tournament.

Southern Lee is off next week for Spring Break before hosting Union Pines on Tuesday, April 10, then Lee County on April 11.
