Jets win Mid-State baseball crown
Jordan-Matthews, the third seed entering the Mid-State Conference baseball tournament, got a triple play and a bases-loaded triple to help win the tournament championship Thursday night with a 9-6 victory over No. 1-seeded Providence Grove (15-9) at Graham High School.
The Jets (18-6) took the early lead until Providence Grove rallied for four runs in the bottom of the third, taking a 5-3 lead. With no outs and two men on, an infield pop-up, with the infield fly rule in effect, led to a triple play to suddenly let the Jets escape a larger deficit.
In the Jet fourth, after already getting one run back, Casey Golden hit a three-run triple to make it 7-5 Jets.
Nigel White, Andrew Myles, Ethan Cook and Josh Hudson combined to handle the Jet pitching. Hudson came on in relief in the fourth, with the Jets leading 8-6, and went the rest of the way.
With the tournament title, the Jets, with a five-game winning streak going, earned a home game in the first round of the NCHSAA 2A State Tournament which is set to start on Friday, May 10.
