Union Pines moves on with walk-off winner

Union Pines 4, Southern Guilford 3

Lady Viking junior Lexie Coxe hit a two-out RBI double bringing Kellie Poindexter around from first to score in the bottom of the seventh inning giving Union Pines the victory in the first round of the NCHSAA 3A State Tournament Friday night in Cameron.

Kyrin Walker pitched a complete game, giving up four hits and two walks while striking out five. Coxe had two RBI on the night.

The Cape Fear Valley champion Lady Vikings (18-3) advance to host Eastern Alamance (21-4) at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the second round.

Williams 2, Western Harnett 1

Williams (11-7) edged the Lady Eagles (14-7), the CFVC’s No. 2 seed, in a NCHSAA 3A first round game in Lillington Friday night.

West Brunswick 2, Triton 0

West Brunswick (15-6) blanked visiting Triton (14-7) in the first round of the 3A tournament Friday night.

Chatham Central 10, South Davidson 0

Chatham Central (23-0) rolled past Yadkin Valley mate South Davidson (5-17) for the fourth time this season in the first round of the NCHSAA 1A State Tournament Friday night in Bear Creek. The Lady Bears held the visitors to two hits in the six-inning game.

The Lady Bears, the YVC season and tournament champions, will host East Surry (20-7) in the second round Tuesday at 7 p.m.

North Moore 5, South Stokes 2

North Moore (17-10), the No. 3 seed from the YVC, defeated visiting South Stokes (11-11) in the 1A first round Friday night.

The Lady Mustangs advance to play at West Wilkes (20-3), champion of the Mountain Valley Conference, in Millers Creek Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Pinecrest 6, Heritage 4

The Lady Patriots got their first state tournament victory in program history at Heritage (12-6), the No. 2 seed from the CAP-8, Friday night in the first round of the NCHSAA 4A State Tournament. Pinecrest (11-10) will play at Fuquay-Varina (13-4) in the second round Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Richmond 11, Harnett Central 0

The Lady Raiders (21-3), the Southeastern Conference champs, routed visiting Harnett Central (9-10) in five innings in a 4A first round game.


South Stokes 3, Chatham Central 2 - 10 innings

The Sauras (16-9) scored the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the 10th to advance through the first round of the NCHSAA 1A State Tournament over visiting Chatham Central (14-11) Friday night.

Zack Burke pitched 9.2 innings for the Bears, allowing one earned run, eight hits and four walks while striking out 12. Cade McIntyre and Chase Fuquay had an RBI each for the Bears.

South Stokes tied the game, 2-2, with a run in the home half of the sixth.

North Moore 15, Union Academy 7

The Mustangs (12-11) rolled through the first round of the 1A state tournament at Union Academy (3-15) in Monroe Friday night.

North Moore will play at YVC champion South Stanly (22-4) in the second round on Tuesday.

Northwood 13, Louisburg 3

The Chargers (20-5) won easily at home, advancing through the first round of the NCHSAA 2A State Tournament, over Louisburg (11-8) Friday night. Northwood will host Corinth Holders (17-6) in the second round on Tuesday.

Swansboro 10, Jordan-Matthews 9

The visiting Pirates (16-7) topped the Jets (18-7) in the first round of the NCHSAA 2A State Tournament Friday night.

Justin Kidd had a homer, a double and four RBI for the Jets. His three-run homer put Jordan-Matthews ahead 7-4 in the fifth.

Swansboro rallied back and scored a lone run in the top of the seventh to take the lead.

Derek Hamilton had a double and two RBI for the Jets.

The Jets end the season as Mid-State Tournament champs.

Eastern Guilford 6, Western Harnett 4

Host Western Harnett (11-12) fell to Eastern Guilford (15-11) in the first round of the NCHSAA 3A State Tournament Friday night. The Eagles finish the season as Cape Fear Valley Tournament champs.

Eastern Alamance 3, Union Pines 0

Eastern Alamance (16-9) beat the visiting Vikings (16-9) in a 3A first round game behind Zack Littell’s one-hitter.

Richmond 9, Harnett Central 0

The Raiders (24-1), champs of the Southeastern, made it 24 straight wins and advanced through the first round of the NCHSAA 4A State Tournament Friday night. The Trojans finish 13-10.

Millbrook 8, Pinecrest 1

Millbrook (13-10) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and beat the visiting Patriots (15-11) in a 4A first round game Friday.

Girls soccer

O’Neal 3, Trinity School 0

No. 5 O’Neal moved through the first round of the NCISAA 2A State Tournament with a shutout against Trinity (7-8-2) in Southern Pines Friday afternoon.

Goals by Chloe Hoffman, in the 17th minute, and Hannah Sullivan, in the 31st minute, gave the Lady Falcons a 2-0 halftime lead.

O’Neal (6-7-1) will travel to face No. 4 American Hebrew Academy (11-4-3) in the state quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Northwood 2, Topsail 0

Northwood (12-7-1) shutout Topsail (7-15-1), a wild card entry from the East Central Conference, and advanced through the second round of the NCHSAA 2A State Tournament Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Chargers will play in the round of 16 at Roanoke Rapids on Wednesday.

Pinecrest 2, Terry Sanford 0

Pinecrest (16-2-3) got a goal each from freshmen Rebecca Neufert and Grace Anne Longfellow and won a NCHSAA 4A second round match at Terry Sanford (15-8-1) Friday night.

The Lady Patriots, the No. 1 Southeastern seed, will host New Bern (12-6-1) in the round of 16 on Wednesday. New Bern won 1-0 at Hoggard Friday night.

Boys tennis

Union Pines senior John Dangerfield reached the state quarterfinals before being defeated by Charlotte Catholic’s Riley Brosnan in Burlington on Friday. The Vikings (17-0) will continue in the quarterfinals of the NCHSAA 3A Dual Team State Tournament hosting Cardinal Gibbons (23-0) at 4 p.m. Monday.
