Lady Crusaders rain threes against Southern Lee

While notching four quadruple-doubles so far this season, Grace Christian's Brooke Strickland usually does a lot of everything for the Lady Crusader basketball team.

Going up against city neighbor Southern Lee for the first time since December 2009, Grace Christian needed only one stat category from its senior swing player. Strickland poured in 30 points, including seven three-pointers, in a 59-36 win over the visiting Lady Cavaliers Thursday night.
Strickland and Grace's usual top-scorer, Anna Murr, put a hot streak of threes together in the second quarter, changing a close contest into one the Lady Crusaders led the rest of the way.
Jasmine McIver led the Lady Cavs with six of their 10 points in the first quarter and Makenzie Cicogna got an offensive board and hoop putting the Lady Cavs up 12-11 a few second into the second quarter.
Southern Lee was shorthanded in the backcourt and in their usual high-pressure defense with the loss of guard Deshele Sumpter to injury, an injured ankle she suffered while getting fouled on a breakaway lay-up in the fourth quarter of Southern's conference win at Western Harnett on Tuesday night.
After the Lady Cavs edged in front by a point, Murr hit back-to-back three-pointers followed by one from Strickland.
From a 26-18 halftime lead, the Lady Crusaders kept pouring it on from beyond the arc. Strickland drained three straight triples to put the Lady Crusaders up 35-20 with 4:24 left in the third period. Murr made a deep three at the horn of the third period for a 47-28 Grace lead.
McIver and Brianna Taylor scored eight points for the Lady Cavs. Ashley Owens led the Lady Cavs with 10 rebounds. Cicogna had six points and nine rebounds. Southern Lee dominated the rebounding for many stretches of the game but couldn't turn three or four shots per possession into baskets.
The Lady Cavaliers (1-6, 1-0) face another county rival Saturday, playing at Lee County with a 5 p.m. tip.
Strickland, along with her 30 points, had five rebounds, three assists and three blocks. Murr had 16 points, six rebounds and four assists. Ross had nine points, six boards and five assists.
Grace Christian (11-2, 3-0) take an eight-game winning streak on the road Friday to  Carolina Christian Conference foe Wayne Christian for a 6 p.m. tip.
