Pullum leads Lee County's swarm
Junior running back Jerry Pullum ran for five touchdowns, four coming in the first 14 minutes of the game, as Lee County routed one of the Cape Fear Valley's defending champions, Gray's Creek, 36-9, in the first-ever CFVC game for the Yellow Jackets Friday night at Paul B. Gay Stadium.
Led by Pullum cutting and sprinting through the Bear defense, the Jackets (5-1, 1-0) made it 30-0 by early in the second quarter. The easy victory sets up a showdown next Friday night in Fayetteville when the Yellow Jackets will meet the other remaining defending champ in the conference, Douglas Byrd. The Eagles romped past Southern Lee 58-12 in those two squads' CFVC openers Friday night in Fayetteville.
The Jackets mixed pass and run to march 83 yards on their opening drive, but had to convert two fourth downs along the way.
Facing a 3rd-and-15 at the Bear 40-yard line, quarterback Duane' Bland scrambled for seven yards. On fourth down, Bland rolled to his left and lofted a pass down the sideline hitting Nolan Groce for a 19-yard gain.
The Jackets ran the ball to a 4th-and-3 on the Bear 7. Bland, going off the left side of the line, gave a late pitch to Pullum and Pullum cut up into the end zone for his first touchdown and a Jacket lead with 7:32 left in the first period.
The Bears gave the hosts added momentum with two very short possessions to start the night. On the second Bear play from scrimmage, a fumbled snap led to linebacker Derrick McIver diving on the loose ball for the Jackets at the Bear 31.
Lee County faced 4th-and-5 only for Bland to find Groce again, this time for a 24-yard pass to the Bear 2-yard line. Pullum powered into the end zone on the next play.
The Yellow Jacket defense scored a safety one snap later, as a wild snap from the Bear 11 went into the end zone. After the Bear kick to the Jackets, Pullum dashed 37 yards for a touchdown. Ian Frye's third extra point of the first quarter made it 23-0 Lee County.
Pullum carries for 16 yards and 40 yards set the Jackets up inside the Bear 5 early in the second quarter and Pullum scored on a 1-yard run. The Jackets led 30-0 with 10:06 left before halftime.
Pullum finished the half with 18 carries for 129 yards. He added his fifth touchdown run of the night, a 35-yard run for another one-play Jacket touchdown drive, with 1:19 left in the third quarter. He had 25 carries for 198 yards on the night.
While the Yellow Jackets were fine giving the ball to Pullum and picking up fourth downs whenever they needed to, Lee County's defense was equally strong.
Gray's Creek was held to 66 rushing yards and 17 passing yards total. The Bears were 0-for-10 converting third-down plays.
Linebacker Will Shoop made four tackles for loss and defensive end Thomas Ferguson made two sacks. The Jackets stopped 14 Bear running plays for losses.
The Bears got on the board with Taylor Sawicki making a 22-yard field goal, making it 30-3 Lee County in the third quarter.
Following a Jacket fumble, one of four fumbles the Jackets lost in the second half, Justis Richardson carried 11 yards for a touchdown with 10:12 left in the game.
Lee County ran the last 10:12 off the clock with its final possession. Bubba Watson filled in for Pullum and rushed 12 times for 50 yards on the last drive.
Bland finished 8-for-14 passing for 125 yards and an interception.
Douglas Byrd (4-2, 1-0) will host the Yellow Jackets at 7:30 p.m. this coming Friday.
