Lady Camels edge Radford in OT, 83-77
Campbell used double-doubles from junior Ashley James and sophomore Kiera Gaines to post an 83-77 overtime win against Radford on Thursday night at Gore Arena/John W. Pope, Jr. Convocation Center.
Totaling a game- and career-high 26 points, Gaines also totaled 14 rebounds and eight assists for Campbell (13-6, 5-3 Big South). Another career-best was achieved by James with 20 points and 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the campaign.
The contest went back and forth as the teams traded the lead 12 times. Towards the end of regulation, the Lady Camels were up by four, 69-65, with two minutes to play before Radford (10-7, 5-3) made two free throws and Da'Na Erwin-Spencer made a jumper just in front of the free throw line with 14 seconds remaining to knot the game at 69.
In the overtime period, junior guard Monique Spry hit a shot from just inside the three-point arc putting the Lady Camels up by five points with 1:37 left.
Even though Radford cut the deficit to one, 78-77, with 0:32 to play, the two-possession difference in the score enabled senior guard Tonisha Baker and Gaines to knock in free throws to preserve the 83-77 victory. The Lady Camels made 10-of-11 free throws during the extra period after shooting 60 percent during regulation.
The Lady Camels posed a plus-23 rebounding margin by grabbing 55 boards. The biggest advantage was on the offensive glass as Campbell pulled down 24 rebounds, leading to 12 second-chance points.
From the field, Campbell hit at a 41.7 percent rate as it took a season-high 72 attempts, while making 4-of-12 shots from long range. Spry contributed 13 points followed by Baker with nine.
Freshman guard RaeChaun Edawrds set a season-high with eight assists as the Lady Camels registered 24 during the contest.
Radford made its runs by forcing 23 turnovers by the Lady Camels, which included 14 steals.
Five Lady Highlanders scored in double figures led by Erwin-Spencer with 14 points. The duo of Ayana Avery and Diani Mason totaled 13 points each, while Victoria Hamilton and Ashley Buckhannon posted 10 points.
The largest lead for Campbell came in the first half on a 27-14 lead with 8:47 left. Radford's largest edge of the game was a 44-40 lead with 15:20 left in the second half.
