Another night, another milestone
One night after becoming Grace Christian's all-time leading scorer, junior guard Anna Murr surpassed 2,000 points for her Crusader career as the Lady Crusaders beat city rival Lee Christian for the second time this season, winning 47-24.
In the boys' varsity game, Grace Christian also swept Lee Christian, taking a 22-0 lead by the end of the first period and going on to a 69-21 win. Senior guard Mark Riches scored 31 points for the Crusaders.
Murr broke Jourdan Frye's 10-year-old Lady Crusader scoring record in Grace's win Monday night over Cresset Christian, a victory which also decided sole possession of first place late in the Carolina Christian Conference season.
Against the Lady Falcons, Murr drained three three-pointers in the first three minutes of play as the Lady Crusaders rolled out to an 11-0 lead. Murr finished with 17 points, including five three-pointers, for 2,006 career points.
Grace Christian (21-3, 11-0) led 17-4 after one period and 32-10 at halftime. Brooke Strickland added nine points, five rebounds and three steals in the half. Forward Peyton Sprouse led the Lady Falcons (8-10, 4-6) with five points.
With the big lead and in the early part of a weather-affected slate of six games in nine days, with Tuesday's game being second in the stretch, Grace head coach Joel Murr spread the second-half minutes around.
Strickland finished with 11 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Gabby Womble had five points and five rebounds. Point guard Alexis Ross had four points and five assists.
Lee Christian, which had back-to-back CCC victories coming into face the Lady Crusaders, was led by Sprouse with eight points and six rebounds. Lauren Lane had seven points and eight rebounds. Whitney O'Quinn had five points and three assists.
The Crusaders jumped out to a commanding lead right away in the boys' game as well.
Riches and B.J. Harrison, who were out injured for Grace's first meeting with Lee Christian this season - a 59-28 Crusader win, led the way in the 22-0 first quarter.
Since a long break in the schedule over Christmas and New Year's, which also coincides with Grace Christian returning to its full lineup, the Crusaders (17-7, 8-3) are 7-2.
Riches finished with 31 points, seven rebounds, five steals and five assists. Harrison scored 16 points, including four three-pointers. Zach Boggs scored eight points. Robert Fulton had five points and six boards.
Freshman center Braxton Deikhoff led the Falcons (2-16, 1-9) with six points and eight rebounds. Nate Davis had four points and five steals. The Crusaders forced 34 Falcon turnovers.
Lee Christian will host a CCC doubleheader tonight against Neuse Christian with the girls' game set for 6 p.m.
Grace Christian hosts Fayetteville Academy tonight with the girls' game starting at 5:45 p.m. The Crusaders will travel to Northwood Temple Friday evening.
