Cape Fear Christian 77, Grace Christian 73

Visiting Cape Fear Christian upset Grace Christian in a quarterfinal of the Carolina Christian Conference Tournament Tuesday night.

After two Grace wins during the regular season, the Eagles got 30 points from James Wilson and Goran Leptovic had 17 points and 18 rebounds.

The Eagles led 58-46 going to the fourth quarter. The Crusaders (19-10) rallied to take a 69-68 lead with 3:00 to play but couldn’t stay in front. Grace played without starting center Fernando DePaz because of a sprained ankle and Cape Fear Christian took advantage inside.

Freshman Zach Boggs led the Crusaders with 27 points. Mark Riches had 15 points and six assists. B.J. Harrison scored 15 points.

Grace Christian now waits on the announcement of the NCISAA 1A State Tournament field which will come out Sunday.

Girls basketball

Grace Christian 72, Northwood Temple 18

Top-seeded Grace Christian romped through a quarterfinal game, jumping out to a 33-4 lead in the first eight minutes. The Lady Crusaders (26-3) advance to host Cape Fear Christian in a semifinal this evening at 5 p.m.

Freshman point guard Alexis Ross, the tallest player of the Lady Crusader starting five, drew the main defensive assignment against 6-foot-4 Milicia Todosjevech.

Todosjevech scored 39 points against Grace earlier this season. This time, Ross held her to 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Anna Murr scored 27 points, including six three-pointers, and Brooke Strickland scored 26 points, including four threes, to lead the Lady Crusaders. Ross had four points and 11 assists. Payton Winchell added five points.

Grace Christian will host both CCC championship games Friday evening.
