Northview wins district, heads to state tourney
The last six innings took five days, but Northview won the 11U Cal Ripken League District 1 Tournament with a 17-2 rout over Laurinburg Optimist Thursday morning.
The final started Sunday. The Northview Allstars, the all-star squad from Deep River Northview Optimist Baseball, led 2-0 through one inning when rain called off the rest of Sunday. The teams returned Monday evening. Northview led 9-0 in the bottom of the third when more rain suspended play.
Finally getting back on the field on Thursday morning, Northview wound up with 17 hits to win the title, finishing the tournament 4-0.
Dean Carver started on the mound and allowed one run and two hits in three innings to get the win. Carver struck out three.
Timmy Parker pitched the last three innings, giving up two hits and no earned runs while striking out five.
Joshua Thomas went 4-for-4 at the plate, with three singles and a double, and drove in three runs. Caleb Reynolds had three hits. Thomas Harrington, Logan Hair and Tucker Nooe had two RBI each.
Northview tallied 14 singles and three doubles. While not needing the longball in the final, Northview hit four homers in the tournament.
Northview advances to the Eastern North Carolina State Tournament which will start Thursday in Hampstead.
