Panther Creek trounces Lady Jackets
With three wins within the first month of the basketball season, Lee County's girls squad is already far ahead of last season's pace. Tri-Nine Conference competition is still another hurdle for the Lady Yellow Jackets and visiting Panther Creek proved it over Lee County with a 70-29 win Thursday night.
Even with a slow start by the Lady Catamounts, they played an efficient game, with lots of assists versus few turnovers to pull away from the Lady Jackets from late in the first quarter on.
Lee County made things tough on the Lady Catamounts (8-5, 3-3) in the first few minutes, holding Panther Creek scoreless for the first three minutes.
A 2-0 Lady Jacket advantage was all that came of it though and from a 6-6 score, Panther Creek jumped out to a 16-7 lead through one quarter.
Continuing on to a 37-12 halftime lead, Panther Creek hurt the Lady Jackets around the hoop with center Allie Tuttle netting 11 points and outside with three Lady Catamounts knocking down three-pointers.
Quitta Wilson, who spurred multiple Lady Jacket fast-break chances with steals, although some of the breaks went for naught, led the Jackets with five points in the first half.
Senior De'ja Bland finished with a team-high eight points for Lee County. Wilson had seven points and four assists. Olivia Sturdivant had six points.
Tuttle had 16 points and five blocks for Panther Creek along with forward Mercedes Harris totaling 11 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks. Jordan Webb and Anna Huryn added nine points each.
The Lady Jackets (3-6, 0-5) will be co-hosts of the Lee County Basketball Shootout Dec. 27-29. The holiday tournament brings eight boys' squads and eight girls' squads for eight games a day at Lee County's two gyms. The Lady Jackets will face Hoke County on the first night of the Shootout at 6 p.m.

At Panther Creek Thursday night, the Jackets (6-3, 4-1) got their fourth straight Tri-Nine victory, edging the Catamounts. Of the six Lee County wins, five have come down to one-possession margins.
Dante Graham led the Yellow Jackets with 19 points. Dewaun McEachin scored 17 points and Trevon Watson added 12 points. Nubian Spann led the Catamounts (4-6, 4-2) with 12 points.
Lee County will play Union Pines in the first round of the Lee County Basketball Shootout on Thursday at 8 p.m.
