Nansemond River rolls past Cavs in Pines tourney

Boys basketball

Nansemond River (Va.) 71, Southern Lee 53

The Warriors (9-2) from Suffolk, Va. gained a 36-27 halftime lead and kept pulling away from the Cavaliers (3-8) in the third-place game of Pinecrest's Holiday in the Pines Saturday.

Freshman Noah Mellette led Southern Lee with 23 points. Juwon Jackson added 12 points.

Devon Oakley led Nansemond River with 27 points and Ed Drew added 14 points.

Mellette and Oakley made the all-tournament team.

The Cavs return to conference play at Union Pines Friday night.

Mount Zion Christian 58, Pinecrest 50

Mt. Zion came back from a 26-23 Pinecrest edge at halftime to win the Holiday in the Pines tourney Saturday night.

Jonathan Milligan led Mt. Zion with 20 points and Britton Reed, who was tournament MVP, scored 13 points.

Adam Cummings had 16 points, including four three-pointers, for the Patriots (9-3) and Justin Ray had 11 points. Cummings made the all-tournament team.

Pinecrest is off until a Southeastern Conference game against visiting Lumberton on Jan. 11.

Jordan-Matthews 57, Wheatmore 49

Llamar Snipes poured in 29 points and earned the tournament MVP award as the Jets (13-0) beat Wheatmore (11-2) for the Courier-Tribune Christmas Invitational championship Saturday night.

Derek Hamilton had 18 points for the Jets. Madison Fountain led Wheatmore with 30 points.

Jordan-Matthews goes on to a Mid-State game at Cummings Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

East Chapel Hill 67, Union Pines 60

The Vikings (4-10) led 28-18 at halftime, then 46-39 through three quarters before the Wildcats (8-5) rallied to win the fifth place game at LCHS Saturday night.

Malik Crawford led the Vikings with 13 points and Matthew Maness added 11 points.

Union Pines will host a Cape Fear Valley Conference game against Southern Pines Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Triton 53, Union 41

Triton (10-2) won the Nathan Gay Holiday Tournament, beating the host school in the final Saturday night.

Senior guard Maurice McBryde led the Hawks with 14 points. Krishawn McBryde scored nine points while Alex Burnett and Dedrick Stacker had eight points each.

Triton will host Cleveland in an Eastern Carolina game Friday at 8 p.m.

Girls basketball

Apex 54, Hoke County 25

Apex (8-5) won the Lee County Basketball Shootout Saturday night. The Lady Cougars won each of their three tourney games by 14 or more points. Apex led the Lady Bucks (3-9) 27-6 at halftime.

Emily Sasser led Apex with 13 points. Tiffany Finley had 12 points and Mia Castagnero had 11 points.

Northwood 58, Union Pines 30

Northwood (7-3) claimed third place in the Lee County tournament Saturday afternoon. Shontai Totten led the Lady Chargers with 16 points.

Marisa Smith led the Lady Vikings (6-8) with 12 points and Charlotte Holder had seven points. Gabby Mehringer scored 11 points for Northwood and Jasmine Atkins added seven points.

Northwood will host Cedar Ridge for a Carolina 12 game Friday at 6 p.m. Union Pines will return to Cape Fear Valley play hosting Southern Lee Friday at 6:30 p.m.
