Sanford equestrians win state titles

CARY - Local equestrians who train at Sanford's Erin Lea Farm won championships and other top places at the North Carolina Dressage and Combined Tests Association annual Horse of the Year awards banquet recently at the Umstead Spa and Resort.

Kate Puricz won the Reserve Champion in the Maiden eventing division and Rebecca Mahaffey won the Reserve Champion in the Junior Beginner Novice eventing division.

Brittany Bridges finished fourth in the Junior Novice and Training eventing divisions. Shannon Allen was fourth in the Maiden division and Hannah Scully finished fourth in the Junior Beginner Novice division.

The five girls are coached by Karen Mahaffey, owner of Erin Lea Farm which is on Chris Cole Road.

The North Carolina Dressage and Combined Tests Association has over 350 members. The equestrians compete in dressage and eventing competitions across the state. Eventing is a three-stage event consisting of dressage, stadium jumping and cross country jumping.
