Pride goes to 7-0 with win over county rival
West Lee Middle School's boys basketball team ran its record to 7-0 with a 63-33 win at rival East Lee on Thursday, keeping the Pride's place atop the Lee/Harnett Athletic Conference.
Demarcus Taylor set the tone for the Pride defense in the first quarter with a big block on a Rocket lay-up attempt. Taylor, Erik Hodge and Ce'Vaun Kinney had four points each for the Pride in the first period while Luke Thomas and Saquan Wallace scored four points apiece for the Rockets. West Lee led 14-10 after one quarter.
West Lee picked up its defensive pressure in the second period and won the quarter 17-8 for a 31-18 halftime lead.
In the third period, the Pride scored 10 fast-break points while continuing to build its lead up to a 48-28 margin.
Taylor led West Lee with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Hodge had 10 points and 14 boards. Nick Grubb had 10 points and 13 rebounds. Hunter Johnson, Griffin Dunne and Noah Terhune added five points each for the Pride.
Wallace led the Rockets with 12 points and Thomas scored 10 points. Caleb Leslie scored six points and Tyler Mauldin added four points.
West Lee will host the Dunn Greenwaves on Thursday at 4 p.m. East Lee will be on the road at Harnett Central on Thursday for a 4 p.m. start.
