Southern Lee's girls basketball squad went to 3-0 in the Cape Fear Valley and made it six wins in its last eight contests overall by hanging on to a 38-37 victory at Union Pines Friday night.

After the Lady Vikings (6-9, 2-2) led throughout the first three quarters, Southern Lee moved in front 38-33 in the final couple minutes. A couple of Lady Viking hoops took the game to the wire.

After Brianna Taylor missed the front end of a Lady Cavalier 1-and-1 chance with 8.4 seconds left, Union Pines got a three-point try by Bethany Daley. Daley's shot from the left wing rimmed off, Taylor grabbed the rebound and hung onto the ball as the last couple seconds ran out.

The scrappy ending, and the ball in Taylor's hands, was fitting. Taylor finished with 11 points, seven rebounds, five steals and four assists.

In a physical, at times ugly, game for both sides, both sides applied full-court defense, both sides fought for every rebound and loose ball, some fouls were whistled and others were allowed to play on and Taylor was in the midst of all of it as usual.

The Lady Viking pressing stunned Southern Lee at the start and Union Pines jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the first 4:08 of action. Freshman center Stephanie Johnson, the leading scorer and rebounder for the Lady Vikings, scored five points in the opening run, but also picked up two fouls. Johnson stayed in foul trouble all night and wound up fouling out with four minutes remaining.

Southern Lee worked its way back to a 17-13 halftime deficit. The Lady Vikings stretched their lead back out during the third period. Maresa Smith's jumper followed by Daley hitting a three-pointer made it 31-23 UP.

Southern Lee closed the quarter with four straight points and Jasmine McIver nailed a three-pointer, her first hoop of the game, bringing the Lady Cavs within 31-30 a few seconds into the fourth quarter.

From an inbounds play under the hoop, Taylor caught the inbounds pass and popped a short jumper in the paint putting Southern Lee up by a point.

A few minutes later, with the score even 33-33, Jordanna Kalkhof hit a three-pointer while drawing Johnson's fifth foul. Kalkhof didn't finish the four-point play but with Johnson out and the Lady Cavs in front it was a big turning point.

The Lady Vikings still rallied for a shot to win. Following a traveling call against the Lady Cavs, a travel with lots of contact involved, the Lady Vikings capitalized with Rachel Breassaeale's lay-up, making it 38-37 Southern Lee with 0:25 left.

Smith led Union Pines with eight points. Charlotte Holder had seven points and 13 rebounds. Johnson finished with seven points.

For Southern Lee (6-7, 3-0), Ashley Owens scored six points. Erin Pickens had five points and eight rebounds. Tiara Bland scored all four of her points in the fourth quarter.

Union Pines has a Cape Fear Valley Conference game at Western Harnett this coming Friday evening. Southern Lee will host Douglas Byrd in a CFVC game Friday evening.
