West Lee stays undefeated with win at Overhills
West Lee Middle School's boys basketball team battled the Overhills Panthers for first place in the Lee/Harnett Conference Monday and the visiting Pride had the last run in a back-and-forth game for a 39-36 victory.
West Lee (6-0) jumped out to a 9-6 lead in the first quarter behind four points and key rebounding by Nick Grubb.
The intensity carried over into the second quarter but the Panthers held the Pride to one of its lowest-scoring quarters of the season. Erik Hodge scored three points for the Pride in the period and West Lee held on to a 14-9 lead at halftime.
With a 12-5 run midway through the third quarter, West Lee took a 12-point lead. Grubb scored six points during the run.
Then it was the Panthers' turn as they went on a run to make it a one-basket game going to the fourth quarter. Overhills took the lead, 30-28, shortly into the last quarter.
The seesaw game continued as there were four more lead changes and three ties down the stretch. West Lee's defense was key at the end and Hodge scored six points in the fourth quarter.
Hodge finished with 13 points and 14 rebounds while Grubb had 13 points and 13 boards. Demarcus Taylor scored eight points and 10 rebounds. Dexter Moore added four points.
