West End amateur Sherrill Britt fired a 5-under-par 66 to lead by three strokes after day one of the 38th Annual Brick Capital Classic Saturday at Sanford Municipal Golf Course.

Eight golfers shot under-par rounds. Britt, who played in the morning half of Saturday's field, leads a group of six players who shot 2-under.

Defending champion Jack Radley and Deane Hundley, who's leading the senior division at the halfway point, shot 69s along with Micah Lawrence, Robin Perkins, Tony Bloedorn and Gaston Berbinitti.

Tony Fish was the lone player to card 1-under 70 Saturday.

Paul Jett, Mike Hundley, Zane Lewis, Shane Parker and Kevin McDougald each shot even-par rounds.

Dale Bryant, Chuck Daly, James Harris, Dylan Kennedy, Michael Rhodes, Zac Lewis, David Wicker and Craig Sturdivant are 1-over through one round. It all adds up to 20 golfers within six shots of Britt.

This summer's tourney drew 150 players, maxing out the field.

"We think we have a very strong field. This is one of the most wide open years as far as who could win the tournament," said David Von Canon, the course's PGA professional earlier last week.

There was increased interest among Sanford and Lee County golfers, along with a few more visitors than usual, with Britt being among the players traveling up from Moore County.

"It's exciting to see the tournament growing in that perspective," Von Canon said.

The four Sanford Golf Course par threes had closest to the pin contests with Dale Ring winning on No. 2, Preston Gaster on No. 6, Sturdivant on No. 11 and David Miller on No. 14.

The Classic concludes today with the low half of the field teeing off at 1:30 p.m. The four leading groups will begin on the No. 1 tee from 1:30-2 p.m.
