Lee County head football coach Burton Cates will lead the North Carolina team in December's 77th Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas.

Cates, who will be coaching in his second Shrine Bowl and first as a head coach in his 30th season as a head coach between Eastern Randolph and Lee County, will be recognized prior to this Friday night's Brick City Bowl game as the Yellow Jackets host rival Southern Lee. Cates will be presented his second Shrine Bowl green jacket, a traditional gift to all coaches in the senior all-star game between North Carolina and South Carolina.

Cates is in his fifth season at Lee County. His career record as a head coach is 268-106 through the Yellow Jacket win at Westover Friday night, putting Cates sixth in wins for active coaches in the state.

The Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas is set for Dec. 21 at Gibbs Stadium in Spartanburg, S.C. South Carolina won last year's game 23-19.

The North Carolina assistant coaches are: Darryl Brown (Southern Guilford), Robert Cody (Plymouth), Blair Hardin (Freedom), Mark Little (West Columbus), Randy Raper (Northern Nash) and Phil Tate (South Point).

The Yellow Jackets (8-2, 4-1) and Cavaliers (3-7, 2-3) will meet for the Brick City Bowl at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Lee County.
