Lady Camels edge UMES on first day in Florida

Campbell's women's basketball team came up with a 77-72 victory against Maryland-Eastern Shore at the North Florida Hampton Inn Oceanside Holiday Classic at the UNF Arena Thursday afternoon.

Sophomore forward Kiera Gaines poured in a career-high 20 points becoming the first Fighting Camel to reach the 20-point plateau this season.

Senior guard Tonisha Baker added 17 points for CU and junior forward Ashley James scored 12 points.

Campbell shot 49.2 percent from the field while hitting at a 40.0 percent rate from behind the arc.

Secondary scoring was provided by freshmen guards Zena Lovette and RaeChaun Edwards with seven points each. Senior guard Monique Spry and junior forward Roslyn Presley contributed five and four points, respectively.

UMES was strong on the glass, especially on the offensive end with 22 rebounds, as it held a 43-36 overall advantage in the category, and a 19-13 lead in second chance points. James pulled down eight rebounds while Baker contributed six and Spry added five.

Campbell registered 14 assists during the contest as both Gaines and Baker led the game with four each. James totaled four blocks on the day, setting a new career-high.

The Lady Hawks were led offensively by the duo of Karona Roach and Sha-Kiyla Finney with 18 points each.

Both teams relied on scoring points in the paint as the Lady Camels had a 34-32 advantage. Even though Campbell committed four more turnovers, 21-17, it still registered 23 points off of UMES turnovers.

The Lady Camels cruised to a 22-5 advantage with 11:48 left in the first. UMES cut the Camel lead down to 39-37 at halftime.

Campbell came out of the locker room after halftime hitting on all cylinders as the lead was pushed to 12, 55-43 with 14:01 left. A 10-0 run was jump started by a three-pointer by Baker, who drained two during the run and added a layup.

Throughout the second half, UMES made runs cutting the deficit to four, but each time the Lady Camels showed poise and pushed their lead back to double digits. The latest 10-point lead for Campbell occurred with 2:50 left on a jumper from James, 72-62, and eventually sealed the victory by sinking five foul shots.

The Lady Camels complete the UNF Holiday Classic today at 1 p.m. against Jacksonville State. Campbell returns to Gore Arena/John W. Pope, Jr. Convocation Center on Thursday for a 7 p.m. tilt vs. Elon.
