West Montgomery rallies to top Bears
With a big second-half comeback, West Montgomery spoiled the fun of Beach Night and a healthy Chatham Central student section with a 62-59 win in the boys half of a Yadkin Valley hoop doubleheader Friday night.
After the Bears controlled the first half and made everything tough on the visitors, taking a 31-19 lead at halftime, the Warriors (3-4, 3-1) turned the game into a frantic pace in the second half and it paid off.
Inside, Shyquarn Little, the Warriors’ 6-foot-5 center, scored 16 of his game-high 20 points in the second half. Outside, Cody McKenzie scored 14 of his 16 points, including hitting four three-pointers, in the second half.
It took about four minutes for the Bears to get on the board. When they did, with Zack Burke getting the first five points, the Bears jumped out to a 10-3 lead.
With the Bears leading 14-9 early in the second, Burke picked up his third foul and spent the rest of the half on the bench.
It didn’t slow the Bears though as the Chatham Central reserves increased the Bear advantage. Guard Adam Teague repeatedly drove or cut inside for hoops around the taller Warriors. He drove for a fading jumper, then made two free throws, to take the Bear lead to 18-9.
Teague led the Bears with nine points inside and reserve center Derrick Harris added seven points and six boards. Brandon Phillips, also a sub, drained a three-pointer at the horn for the 31-19 Bear margin at the half.
West Montgomery cut the Bear lead down to 35-30 within the first three minutes of the third quarter. The Warriors picked up their defensive pressure. While still not making a high percentage of their shots, Little grabbed a lot of the misses and turned them into baskets as the Bears couldn’t stop him.
Jeremy Kerr’s three-pointer at the horn to end the third period gave the Bears a 44-40 lead.
The Warriors took their first lead since the first few minutes of the game when Caleb Drake caught a Warrior airball and made a stick-back for a 49-48 Warrior lead with 4:50 remaining.
The sides traded the lead with Burke getting a hoop inside, then a pair at the line, each time putting the Bears up by a point.
Little made a three-point play, rebounding his own miss and making the second shot while being fouled, for a 54-52 West Montgomery lead.
The Bears got back to a tie game three times, the last when Teague drove from the corner, across the lane, and tossed in a tough shot for a 59-59 score with 0:25 left.
After a timeout, the Bears fouled McKenzie as he dribbled 35 feet from the hoop. He made both ends of the one-and-one putting the Warriors ahead with 0:14 left.
Burke drew a foul on a jumper in the lane, but missed both free throws with 5.1 seconds left.
After Little made 1-of-2 free throws, the Bears had one last chance, but a 30-foot shot by Burke bounced off the rim at the buzzer.
Burke finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Teague scored 14 points. Harris and Kerr added nine points each.
