No-hitter leads Crusaders into CCC semis
Grace Christian 17, Northwood Temple 0
Montgomery Kirby threw a five-inning no-hitter as the Crusaders (12-7) rolled through the quarterfinals of the Carolina Christian Conference Tournament at home Tuesday afternoon.
The Crusaders advance to a semifinal game at Wayne Christian tonight at 7 p.m. in Goldsboro.
In addition to the tournament win, the Crusaders celebrated Senior Day recognizing seniors Nolan Shoemake, Mark Riches and Kirby before the game.
Kirby struck out seven while allowing one walk as the only Northwood Temple batter to reach base.
The Crusaders tallied 12 hits highlights by Micah Welborn's two-run home run in the second inning. Welborn went 3-for-3 with four RBI on the day. Kirby went 2-for-2 and had two RBI.
Grace Christian is ranked fourth in the current NCISAA 1A state rankings.
Trinity Academy 10, Lee Christian 5
After an 8-7 Falcon win in a regular-season game last Friday, Trinity Academy advanced past the Falcons in a CCC Tournament quarterfinal on Tuesday. Trinity Academy advances to Thursday's semifinals in Goldsboro. Lee Christian (3-7) will play its season finale at O'Neal Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Jordan-Matthews 4, Graham 1
Nathan Poirier pitched a complete game for the Jets (16-6) as they beat Graham for the third time this season in a first-round game of the Mid-State Conference Tournament in Siler City Tuesday night.
Jordan-Matthews played Eastern Randolph in a semifinal game last night. The Mid-State final is set for tonight at Graham.
Pinecrest 5, Lumberton 0
Tristan Helms pitched a three-hit shutout leading the Patriots (15-9) through the first round of the Southeastern Conference Tournament Tuesday night in Southern Pines.
Carson Maples hit a three-run homer during a five-run third inning for the Patriots.
Pinecrest played top-seeded Richmond last night in a semifinal game. The SEC final is set for tonight.
Overhills 8, Douglas Byrd 1
The Jaguars (6-14, 6-6) beat the visiting Eagles in their regular-season finale Tuesday night. Overhills finishes fifth in the Cape Fear Valley.
Overhills will host the CFVC Tournament starting tonight.
Triton 2, South Johnston 0
Triton (16-7, 7-5) claimed second place in the Eastern Carolina Conference in its regular-season finale Tuesday night.
Brett McLamb pitched a three-hit shutout and struck out 10. Austin Lee's two-run homer in the fourth was the Hawk offense. Triton, in its last two games, sweeps South Johnston for the regular season.
Jordan-Matthews 15, Reidsville 0
Jordan-Matthews rolled to its third double-digit win of the season over Reidsville in the first round of the Mid-State Conference Tournament Tuesday in Siler City. The Lady Jets (12-6) played Eastern Randolph in a semifinal last night. The Mid-State final is set for tonight at Jordan-Matthews at 6 p.m.
South Granville 6, Northwood 1
South Granville (17-1, 13-0) topped the Lady Chargers (12-5, 9-3) for the second time in four days in a Carolina 12 game Tuesday evening. Northwood will host Granville Central Friday at 6 p.m.
Douglas Byrd 4, Overhills 3
Douglas Byrd (10-8, 5-7) won at Spring Lake in the regular-season finale for both sides. The Lady Eagles clinched fourth place in the CFVC.
Overhills (4-15, 4-8) will host the CFVC Tournament Thursday, Friday and Monday.
Triton 4, North Lenoir 2
No. 3-seeded Triton (14-5) advanced past No. 6 North Lenoir in the first round of the Eastern Carolina Conference Tournament Tuesday night.
Julie Hodges pitched a complete game, giving up four hits, one earned run and no walks. Kaitlin Ennis went 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBI. Emma Thomas had two doubles, a run and an RBI.
Triton will play at No. 2 South Johnston this evening at 6 p.m.
Pinecrest 6, Purnell Swett 4
Pinecrest (8-8) advanced through the first round of the Southeastern Conference Tournament Tuesday night. The Lady Patriots played a semifinal game last night and the SEC final is set for tonight at Pinecrest.
Athens Drive 4, Lee County 0
Athens Drive won at Tri-Nine match at Lee County Tuesday evening. The Lady Yellow Jackets (0-17, 0-15) played at Holly Springs last night and will host Southern Lee Friday at 6:30 p.m.
Pinecrest 6, Hoke County 0
Top-seeded Pinecrest (13-2-3) blanked visiting Hoke County in a Southeastern Conference Tournament semifinal Tuesday night. The Lady Patriots have a seven-match winning streak.
Pinecrest is hosting Lumberton (15-3-1) in the tournament final tonight at 7 p.m.
West Montgomery 4, North Moore 1
West Montgomery (7-7-1) turned a 1-1 halftime score into a Yadkin Valley win at North Moore (2-12-1) Tuesday night. The Lady Mustangs hosted Chatham Central last night.
Triton 4, Southern Wayne 0
Triton (9-9) made it 3-0 over Southern Wayne this season advancing past the Lady Saints in the first round of the Eastern Carolina Tournament Tuesday night. Triton played Cleveland in a semifinal last night.
South Central 9, Overhills 0
South Central (17-1) advanced through the first round of the NCHSAA 3A Dual Team State Tournament on Tuesday. The Jaguars, the No. 2 seed from the Cape Fear Valley, finish the team season 10-3.
Broughton 5, Pinecrest 1
Broughton (19-2), a wild card entry into the 4A Dual Team State Tournament, defeated Southeastern Conference champion Pinecrest (11-3) Tuesday in Southern Pines.
