Campbell's McCarter repeats as player of the week
After leading Campbell to back-to-back wins to start league play, Reco McCarter earned his second straight Choice Hotels Big Conference men's basketball player of the week honor on Monday.
A red-shirt junior forward, McCarter averaged 21.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.5 steals while shooting 55.6 percent from the floor (15-27), 45.5 percent from three-point range (5-11) and 70 percent from the stripe (7-10).
McCarter, a native of Goldsboro, led CU with 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists in a 74-71 victory over High Point.
McCarter ignited Campbell's game-ending 25-7 run, scoring 11 points in the span, and finished Saturday's 75-67 win at Longwood with team highs of 23 points, eight boards, four assists, three steals and two blocks.
Campbell's victory after a 13-point deficit in the second half is CU's largest comeback of the season.
"Reco continues to show how he is emerging as both a player in the Big South and a leader on our team," said first-year Camel head coach Kevin McGeehan. "You can really see his confidence growing daily. "
Over the last four games, McCarter is averaging 21.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 2.3 steals and 1.0 blocks. He's averaging 11 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game for the season.
Campbell (8-9, 2-0) played a Big South game at Liberty on Tuesday night.
The Camels host VMI at 2 p.m. Saturday in the final meeting at Gore Arena between the schools before the Keydets leave the Big South for the Southern Conference in 2014-15.
