Rivals take to the track

As high school track season moves toward it's key points, every day left in the season is all about peaking at the right time.

Even a county rivalry and the only meeting of the season between rivals, such as Lee County and Southern Lee clashing Tuesday at Cavalier Stadium, takes, maybe not a back seat, but certainly a preparatory place, to what the Yellow Jackets and Cavaliers have coming up in the next few weeks.

With both squads facing quick turnarounds this week, especially by track and field norms, then the postseason quickly approaching, the Cavaliers and Yellow Jackets were competing while keeping an eye on being 100 percent - in Lee County's case for a Tri-Nine meet at Panther Creek on Thursday and in Southern Lee's case for a home Cape Fear Valley meet against Gray's Creek and Westover on Thursday.

Southern Lee sophomore Emily Lambeth won a long-distance hat trick as the Lady Cavaliers won nine of the 16 events on the afternoon. Lambeth won the 800, 1,600 and 3,200-meter races.

Southern Lee's Maggie Yow, only a few minutes apart in what was a busy afternoon for nearly every member of the Cavalier and Jacket teams, won the 400 meters and the 300 hurdles.

The Cavaliers, coming off of finishing second in a four-team CFVC meet last week in Fayetteville, took first place over their Jacket rivals in 13 of 16 boys' events.

Kendrick Davis took the two sprint victories, winning the 100 in 11.12 seconds and the 200 in 23.6.

A.J. Giles won a unique combo of events: the 300 hurdles and the shot put. Garrett Wilson did the same, winning the discus and high jump.

For Lee County, Dalton Cox won the 1,600 and 3,200. For the Lady Jackets, Jasmine Person won the 100 meters in 12.7 seconds and Zizi Hammond won the 200 in 27.43 seconds.

Lee County will host a Tri-Nine meet on Thursday, April 25 as its last tune-up for the Tri-Nine Conference Championships on May 1-2 at Panther Creek.

The 3A postseason schedule runs a week ahead of the 4A calendar. The Cape Fear Valley Conference Championships are set for April 24-25 at Fayetteville's Reid Ross Classical School.
