O'Neal wins CFIC hoops title
O'Neal's boys' basketball team upset its way to the Cape Fear Independent Conference Tournament championship with a 62-59 win over Village Christian Saturday night.
O'Neal (13-13) beat the top two seeds in the semis, against Fayetteville Academy, and the final to win the title and win its way into the NCISAA 1A State Tournament. The Falcons were a combined 1-3 against Fayetteville Academy and Village Christian in the regular season.
O'Neal, as the No. 11 seed in the 12-team field, will travel to face No. 6 Westchester Country Day in High Point in the first round of the NCISAA 2A State Tournament this evening at 6 p.m.
The Falcon swimming team is also in the NCISAA State Tournament, being held today in Greensboro. On O'Neal's athletics web site, in support of Falcon basketball and swimming, school headmaster Alan Barr, "declared a 'no homework night' for Tuesday, in hopes that everyone will rally for the cause!"
All of the NCISAA state tourney brackets were released Sunday. In the 1A Girls Tournament, Grace Christian (28-3) earned a No. 2 seed and a first-round bye. The Lady Crusaders will play the winner of No. 7 Statesville Christian vs. No. 10 Shannon Forest Christian in a quarterfinal game at Covenant Day School Thursday at 1 p.m.
Grace Christian's boys team is the No. 9 seed in the 1A bracket and drew a road game at No. 8 Community Christian in Wilson tonight.
Both Cape Fear Christian squads made the state tournaments. On the boys' side, No. 10 Cape Fear Christian plays at No. 7 Wayne Country Day tonight. The No. 9 Lady Eagles play at No. 8 Hickory Christian tonight.
