Chatham County Sheriff’s Office investigators have charged a Goldston woman with embezzling nearly $1 million from her employer.

According to a news release, the CCSO received a report recently of an embezzlement by an employee of the Basic Machinery Company in Siler City.

Cheryl Rouse Fields, 65, of the 1300 block of J Cook Road in Goldston, served as an administrative manager and oversaw payroll for the business and faces charges in the incident.

An internal audit by the company uncovered inconsistencies in documentation and further investigation revealed that Fields had allegedly routinely overpaid herself for at least a decade. Investigators estimated the amount to be more than $900,000.

Fields was arrested on charges of felony embezzlement and felony corporate malfeasance. She was issued a promise to appear in Chatham County District Court in Pittsboro on June 7.
