Since winning their final two matches of a season-opening tournament at home two weeks ago, Lee Christian’s volleyball team has kept on rolling.
The Falcons played two away matches last week and prevailed in both of them, downing Southside Christian in four sets last Tuesday and then spiking Kerr-Vance in straight sets during a Friday road trip to Henderson.
The wins improved the team’s season slate to 6-2 and made them the sixth-ranked 1A team in MaxPreps’ latest NCISAA power ratings. Remarkably, Lee Christian is doing this while competing in high school varsity matches with two seventh-graders, two eighth-graders, and one freshman on a nine-player roster.
Clearly, these Falcons, who have been beaten only by No. 3-ranked Cape Fear Christian and by public school North Moore (8-3), aren’t interested in using youth as an excuse for not winning. On Tuesday, Lee went up to Clayton and faced Southside (3-2). The Falcons won the first two sets 25-16 and 25-23, but then got pounded by the home team in set three, dropping the set by 15 points. Lee responded by winning the fourth set by 14, and claimed the win.
Friday’s win over Kerr-Vance came with little suspense, as Lee routed the Spartans 25-18, 25-18, 25-14.
The Falcons hosted Community Christian on Monday in a match that ended after press time. They will host Cresset this evening and complete their week on Friday with a trip to Crossroads Christian.
