To the Editor:
On a Friday morning the faithful awoke to find that the so-called children of God had forged a literal golden idol to their false god Donald; burned their offerings at the festival of the “Conservative Political Action Conference” (CPAC). Just as the people of Moses stripped the gold from their ears, so too have the sons of Reagan cast their wealth into the fires and gilded this Baal of a man.
Perhaps it is no coincidence that “[t]hen the Lord sent a plague on the people, because they made the [golden] calf …” (Exodus 32: 35).
But I am neither conservative nor Jewish. Sons of Reagan, your Old Testament and Pauline prophets all mean little to me. I heed the prophet Christ and his Gospels, and he warned me of men and women such as these: “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits …” (Matthew 7: 15-16). These Donalds, these Marjorie Taylor Greenes — their fruits taste bitter with spite and anger. They lay claim to righteous piety, but not everyone who says ‘lord, lord’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven; no, one might well suspect that He will simply declare ‘I never knew you.’
After all, they fail to uphold the Lord’s second greatest command: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” (Matthew 22: 39). Their idol riles hate for their fellow man, and their representatives cannot even muster a ‘Yea’ for an Equality Act — legal dignity and respect for their queer brothers and sisters in Christ. Such is their way. May the hearts of Marjorie and her ilk remain hardened as the Pharaoh; the Lord will have his due. All the while, I shall stand firm in the faith. I have no time for idols.
