Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields is warning people of multiple scams that have recently been reported to the sheriff’s office.

In recent reports, citizens are contacted and told they are speaking with someone with Duke Energy. The caller states that they have 30 minutes to pay their bill or their power will be shut off.

“This is a scam,” Fields said in a release. “If you receive a call like this, hang up and call the number listed on your Duke Energy utility bill.”

Fields asks people to keep the following in mind if they receive this type of call:

• Duke Energy will never initiate a threatening phone call demanding payment now or loss of service.

• Duke Energy will never insist on a specific type of payment (eg. wire transfer, prepaid debit card, mobile banking app)

• Scammers try to get you to act fast and not take the time to analyze the situation

If there is ever any doubt, hang up and call the Moore County Sheriff’s Office at 910-947-2931 with any questions or concerns.
