A second suspect has been identified in a graduation party shooting from June 5, 2021, that left an 18-year-old man dead.
Jquan Tyrone Smith of Sanford was 16 at the time of the shooting. He’s now 19 and was scheduled to be in court for an administrative hearing on June 12. That hearing was continued, but a trial, where he is charged with murder and handgun possession by a minor, is set for Aug. 5.
Previously identified by the Sanford Herald and also charged with the same offenses is Christian Mykel Smith, then 15 and now 18. He was scheduled for an administrative hearing on June 14. A trial date in his case has not been set yet.
According to a court document, Jason Lamont Harrington Jr., 18, was shot several times in a parking lot at Baymont Inn in Sanford and died later at a hospital.
Some 12 to 13 young people were there for a graduation party, according to a witness as stated in a court document.
Three 9 mm shell casings were found on the ground near a pool of blood when police arrived around 12:57 a.m.
A witness said Harrington came to his room around 11 p.m. on June 4, 2021.
Bryanna Farrish said she brought three guys to the hotel for the party, along with her cousin Mahogany, whom she described as “extremely intoxicated.” Farrish said she was driving a blue Chrysler 300.
A man who was staying at the hotel said he saw a blue Chrysler 300 pull up with two men in the back and a woman driver. A man approached the vehicle and tried to convince the driver to let another woman stay at the party, the witness said, according to a court document.
The witness said he overheard the woman driver tell the man that she couldn’t let the other woman stay because she was drunk and she was her responsibility. A man then got out the car and started fighting with the man who approached the vehicle and later shot him, according to the witness.
“The black male that got out of the car started to punch the male from the party,” Detective Gregory Parker wrote. “The male from the party was knocked to the ground. As the black male that was on the ground was getting up, the male from the car pulled out a handgun and started to shoot him several times. I think he was shot in the head once or twice.”
One witness said he saw Christian Mykel “Slim” Smith shoot Harrington in the back, and then saw Jquan Tyrone Smith shoot Harrington in the back and head, according to a court document. Prior to the shooting, the witness said he saw Jquan Tyrone Smith and Harrington fighting.
When Officer Heck arrived on scene, he said he saw several subjects running toward Brick Capital Apartments.
Parker stated in a search warrant for an apartment in the 2600 block of S. Horner Boulevard that he noticed a bullet hole in a rear window of an apartment with blood on the window sill.
Police said Jquan Tyrone Smith was allegedly living at 218 Simmons St. with his grandmother at the time of the shooting.
Both Smiths are held on a $500,000 bond.
