How better to end a perfect season than to play a perfect match?
Union Pines completed its 2021 dual-team tennis season Tuesday evening as Tri-County Conference champions. Although the Vikings were unable to play any non-conference matches this spring due to the shortened season, they made a clean sweep of the conference matches.
Union Pines wrapped up a perfect 8-0 season with a shutout of Western Harnett. Only four singles matches and one doubles match were contested, due to the Eagles lacking players. In the matches that were played, every one of them ended with the apropos score of 8-0, meaning the perfect season had the perfect ending.
Union Pines won’t get a chance to play for a dual-team state title this season. Those playoffs were cancelled months ago as the NC High School Athletic Association scrambled to give every team some sort of a season after COVID-19 wiped out the fall playing schedules. The Vikings’ campaign will forever be recorded at 8-0.
It is the 39th conference championship for the program since the school opened its doors in 1964.
The matches themselves were anticlimactic. Union Pines’ 1-4 in singles all won 8-0. The winners in those matches were River Britt, Lily Slyman, Tyne Ross and Eleanor Slyman. Nos. 5 and 6 McKayla Kirk and Abby Robertson won by default.
In doubles, Britt and Lily Slyman won the No. 1 doubles by shutout, while Kirk and Robertson were awarded a win by default.
The dual-team season is over, and the annual conference tournament has also been cancelled, but the state tournament championships are still on. Union Pines will play on in the 3A Mideast Regional on June 18-19 at the Burlington Tennis Center. Anyone qualifying for the state finals will move on to play in them on June 25-26, also in Burlington.
