Caterpillar Inc. in Sanford is among four finalists vying for the title of “Coolest Thing Made in NC.”

More than 30,000 votes have been cast to find the winner of the contest sponsored by the N.C. Chamber of Commerce and Old Dominion Freight Line Inc.

Caterpillar was nominated for production of its Cat 299D3 XE Compact Truck Loader, according to a release from the state chamber.

The contest began with 70 entries that were narrowed to 15 semifinalists. Nominees have represented a broad range of specialties including food products, handmade soaps, children’s furniture, excavators, home appliances and electric vehicles, the release said.

The other finalists are HondaJet Elite in Greensboro, Thomas Built Buses Electric Bus in High Point, and George’s BBQ Sauce in Nashville.

“With more than 30,000 votes cast in this contest so far, it’s apparent that North Carolinians understand the significance of our state’s manufacturing community,” Gary Salamido, president and CEO of the state chamber, said in the release.

Salamido, in citing the ability of companies to switch over to manufacturing much-needed personal protective equipment during the COVID-19 pandemic, said:“We are grateful to the entire manufacturing community — the backbone of our state’s economy for more than a century.”
