A longtime Lee County deputy announced Monday he will run for sheriff in the 2022 election.
Brian Estes, 40, made the announced in a post on his Facebook page.
“I am excited to announce that I will be forming a committee to seek the office for Sheriff of Lee County,” Estes wrote. “After many prayers and discussions with my family, I would love to serve the great citizens of our County as Sheriff.”
Estes, a Lee County native, has been with the sheriff’s office for 18½ years, his post says. He has worked in various divisions of the department including drug enforcement.
“My badge has always been a symbol of public trust to me,” Estes said in his post. “Over the next few months you will learn more about my experience, education and training. I look forward to sharing the visions that I have for the Sheriff’s Office.”
Estes could not be reached for comment Monday afternoon.
His decision comes after Sheriff Tracy Carter announced Thursday that he will not seek a fifth four-year term in the office and has decided to retire.
