CARTHAGE — Charges have been filed against a Vass man who is accused of sexually assaulting a minor, according to the Moore County Sheriff’s Office.

Jackson Stewart Smith, 18, was arrested Monday on charges of first-degree forcible rape, statutory rape of a child under age 15 and sexual battery.

The Sheriff’s Office received a report Jan. 12 that a juvenile was sexually assaulted in the Vass area, a news release said.

“After a serious and complex investigation that included both forensic and digital evidence examination and analysis, probable cause was established which enabled us to make an arrest,” Sheriff Ronnie Fields said in the release.

Smith was jailed under a $5,000 secured bond that was pre-set by a District Court judge, the release said.
