Sanford Mayor Pro Tem Rebecca Wyhof Salmon was appointed Friday to the N.C. Oil & Gas Commission, the state board that regulates oil and gas development and mining in the state.
Gov. Roy Cooper appointed Wyhof Salmon, who has been on the Sanford City Council since 2011, to the commission along with Dr. Jim Zhang of Chapel Hill.
“The opportunity to serve the state of North Carolina is an honor and a position of trust I take seriously,” Wyhof Salmon said Monday. “The matters that come before the Oil and Gas Commission have potential health, environmental and economic ramifications. I intend to bring a rational and balanced approach to deciding the matters before this commission.”
She joins fellow Sanford residents Jim Womack, the commission’s chair, and Mike Stone, both of whom were appointed by the N.C. General Assembly last year. Womack said Monday the commission planned to meet again in August.
Wyhof Salmon is president of Blue Roof Strategies, a marketing and communications firm based in Sanford. She was picked for the Oil & Gas Commission as an elected official of a municipal government.
She said it is “imperative” to both “ensure the current and future health, safety and welfare” of North Carolinians and meet “the energy needs of our economy.”
“I hope that we can act for the best interests of the state and keep politics out of these critical regulatory decisions,” she added.
