SANFORD — James Thomas Smith, 84, of Sanford, passed away Saturday (04/10/21) at Central Carolina Hospital.

He was born in Johnston County on

July 13, 1936, to Dallas Smith and Mae Johnson Smith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Paul Anthony Smith; step-father Ranson Stephenson; grandson James Smith and wife Jenny. James retired from Carnes Company after 40 years of service.

After his retirement, he worked as a greeter at Walmart for more than 15 years and also many years at San-Lee Park.

He was a member of Central Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife Virginia Dare Champion Smith; sons, Pete Smith and wife Lois of Sanford, Mark Smith of Sanford; daughter Jennifer Kupris and husband Phillip of Tennessee; sister Myrtle Smith of Sanford; grandchildren, Teria Rodgers, Teresa Baker, Nicole Saeny, Ashley Walden, Lynda Stewart, Brittany Hughes; and 27 great-grandchildren.

Visitation is noon-1 p.m. Wednesday at Bridges-Cameron

Funeral Home.

The funeral service follows at 1 p.m. in the chapel with Pastor Jason Dowdell officiating.

Burial will follow at Lee Memory Gardens.

The family asks that those attending the services to wear a

mask.
