SANFORD — Rudolph Stone, 84, son of Thomas and Massie Stone, who was born in Chatham County on Aug. 6, 1936, departed this life Monday (05/31/21) in the comfort of his home.
Rudolph was a member of Mt. Sinai A.M.E Church in Pittsboro. He graduated from Horton High in 1956 and was a gifted athlete. Rudolph participated in football and baseball. He received numerous accolades for both. While known for his skills on the football ﬁeld, he was also the life of the party and loved to dance. Rudolph’s humor was always evident and he never hesitated to tell you his opinion. You could never leave his presence without experiencing laughter.
He retired from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with 30 years of service.
He is preceded in death by his wife of almost 50 years, Mary Stone. Left to cherish many, many loving memories are his children David Rudolph Burnette (Burlington), Vickie Edwards (Chapel Hill) and Cheryl Denise Cureton (Michael) of Durham; siblings Fulton Headen (Pittsboro), George Stone (Forestville, Maryland) and Dalton Stone (Pittsboro); brother-in-law Lenon Brooks (Pittsboro). He also leaves ﬁve grandchildren Taiwana Burnette (Pittsboro), Jermaine Evans (Pittsboro), Moriah Cureton (Durham), Zaquetta Henderson (Mebane) and David Cureton (Durham); four great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A public viewing is noon-5 p.m. Thursday at Knotts Funeral Home, 50 Masonic St., Pittsboro. A funeral service is noon Friday at the Pittsboro Fairgrounds, 191 Fairground Road. Burial follows in the Pittsboro Community Cemetery, 258 Fairground Road.
