SANFORD — Shelton Owen Smith, 65, of Sanford, formerly of Moncure, departed this life Saturday (04/17/21) at Central Carolina Hospital after a brief illness.

Shelton Owen Smith (Check), son of Thelma Novella Smith-Harris and Hubert Toomer, was born Aug. 2, 1955, in Chatham County.

Shelton was a Northwood High School graduate, class of 1973, and very active Northwood’s sports programs, including basketball and track. He worked at Webster Poultry for many years and worked in the janitorial business with a close friend, Lynn Taylor.

He taught himself how to play the guitar, loved to walk, listen to various kinds of music and was an avid reader of books, newspapers, magazines and enjoyed watching TV. Shelton grew up in Moncure and later moved to and resided in Sanford.

Shelton was preceded in death by his mother Thelma Harris in 2011, his father Hubert Toomer in 2016, his brother Danny Harris in 2019 and his son Michael Bellamy in 2020.

He leaves to mourn one son Brandon Monroe of Fayetteville; four sisters, Karen Marsh (Ricky), Faye Toomer Neal, Janet Toomer Pugh, Gabrilla Toomer Singh (Ronnie), all of Moncure; three brothers, Alvin Harris (Bernie) of Apex, Donell Toomer of Fuquay Varina, Jasper Toomer of Moncure; three grandchildren, Malik, Zaiden and Iyanna of Sanford; one uncle, three aunts, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A funeral service is 1 p.m. Friday at Knotts Funeral Home in Pittsboro. Burial will follow in Liberty Chapel Church Cemetery in Moncure.
