SANFORD — Central Carolina fought off local rival Fayetteville Tech for a 94-91 victory in a Region X basketball contest Monday night.
The Cougars led most of the way and were up 46-36 at halftime.
The Trojans cut the margin down to a point, 63-62, with 10 minutes left in the game, but the Cougars stayed in front the rest of the way.
Former Western Harnett standout Darnell Carver led the Cougars with 20 points, including 4-of-7 three-point shooting, and added three assists.
Montell Moore scored 13 points. Center Ababacar Thiam got eight points, six rebounds and two blocks. Camaron Womble had seven points and six assists.
Off the Cougar bench, Derek Gardner scored 14 points, Wesley Case scored 13 and Trevon Bell scored 13. Bell got a team-high eight rebounds.
Central Carolina held its Sophomore Night for five sophomore student-athletes: Carver, Moore, Womble, Thiam and Josh Bell.
The Cougars (4-9) have three road games, at Catawba Valley at 6 p.m. Thursday, at Bryant and Stratton Sunday and at Sandhills March 31, left in their regular season. The NJCAA Region X Tournament is scheduled to start April 3.
