UNC Pembroke senior Nick Daggett finished national runner-up in the NCAA Division II National Championships at 125 pounds last weekend in St. Louis.


UNC Pembroke senior and All-American Nick Daggett (Chatham Central) finished as the national runner-up in the NCAA Division II Championships last weekend in St. Louis.

Daggett, in the 125-pound class, advanced through the quarterfinals with a 9-0 majority decision win over Josh Portillo of Nebraska-Kearney. Daggett defeated Christian Mejia of McKendree 6-5 in the semifinals.

In the national final, Cole Laya of West Liberty beat Daggett 12-2.

Daggett is a four-time NCAA Championship qualifier in his Brave career. He won three NCAA Super Region championships and two All-American awards.


Former Lady Jacket standout Lexis Goldberg (Lee County) scored a goal and had an assist, both firsts in the freshman’s collegiate career, in Barton’s 5-2 victory over Emmanuel in Franklin Springs, Ga. Feb. 28.

Barton fell behind 2-0 in the first 13 minutes, then started the rally with a goal in the 31st minute. Goldberg scored 21 seconds into the second half and assisted on a goal to make it 5-2 in the 86th minute.

Barton drew 2-2 with Belmont Abbey March 8. Goldberg had four shots, with three on goal, for the Lady Bulldogs.

Barton (1-1-1) will play at Mt. Olive March 24.


Campbell freshman Thomas Harrington (Southern Lee) started on the mound for the Camels in a 4-3 win against USC Upstate which was game one of a Big South doubleheader sweep for the Camels (9-5, 4-2) in Buies Creek Saturday.

Harrington went 4.1 innings allowing three earned runs and getting no decision.

The Camels rallied from down 3-1 with two runs in the sixth and a walk-off run, with a run scoring on a passed ball with two outs, in the ninth.

Harrington is 1-1 in four starts with a 3.44 ERA and 20 strikeouts for the season.

Campbell will play UNC Asheville at 5 p.m. Friday, then in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Saturday.

No. 14-ranked East Carolina (13-2) swept a three-game series against Charlotte last weekend at ECU.

In game one, a 7-4 Pirate win, shortstop Ryder Giles (Union Pines) got a pair of RBI singles.

ECU took game two 3-1. Giles tallied a hit, a walk and a run.

ECU finished the sweep with a 3-1 win Sunday. Catcher/DH Seth Caddell (Pinecrest) had a hit and a run. Giles started at shortstop, then was the closer pitching a three-up, three-down ninth for a save.

For the season, Caddell is hitting .281 with six home runs, 17 RBI and 12 runs in 15 games. Giles has scored nine runs, committed two errors and pitched in five games with a 0.00 ERA in 4.0 innings.

The Pirates will host Illinois St. for a three-game series starting Friday night.


Sandhills (12-2, 9-2) won its fourth game in a row, routing Hosanna 111-76 in The Hangar Monday night.

Freshman Jonah Murr (Grace Christian) scored 10 points, with two threes included, and got four rebounds and sophomore Nathan Yow (Grace Christian) added seven points and five assists for the Flyers. Freshman guard Nasir Johnson paced the Flyers with 22 points and six assists.

Sandhills will host Catawba Valley at 3 p.m. Saturday.


Sandhills (15-3) swept Patrick Henry 25-10, 25-14, 25-12 Tuesday night at SCC.

Flyer setter Camryn Lowe (North Moore) surpassed 1,000 assists in her collegiate career with an assist to Carley Modlin (Pinecrest) in the first set.

Lowe totaled 36 assists in the win. Modlin had 12 kills and five total blocks. Alexus McCrimmon (North Moore) scored seven kills.

Sandhills hosts Central Carolina at 6 p.m. this evening, then will host Fayetteville Tech at 6 p.m. Friday.
