No. 1-seeded Pinecrest advanced through the first round of the NCHSAA 4A State Volleyball Tournament at home Tuesday night. The Lady Patriots (15-0) swept No. 16 Ashley (9-3) 25-16, 25-16, 25-23.

Pinecrest, the undefeated champ in the Sandhills Athletic Conference and the top seed in the East Region of the 32-school tournament, got 17 assists by Sydney Karjala and 13 assists by Madi Ringley.

Emmie Modlin scored 10 kills and made 10 digs. Chloe Modlin had eight kills and six blocks. Sophi Galford made a team-high 16 digs. Ringley served 14 service points.

Pinecrest advances to the second round and another match at home Thursday night against the winner of No. 8 Broughton and No. 9 Holly Springs. Should the Lady Patriots keep playing on, they’d host each round through the state semifinals.

Cedar Ridge d. Union Pines 25-17, 25-13, 25-13

In the first round of the NCHSAA 3A State Tournament, No. 8 Cedar Ridge (9-0) defeated No. 9 Union Pines in straight sets in Hillsborough Tuesday night.

Cedar Ridge is the Big Eight champ. The Lady Vikings repeated as Tri-County 6 Conference champs for the fourth consecutive year. Union Pines ends the season 9-3 overall.
